Sophisticated spaces

Today’s nurseries are all grown up. Say buh-bye to pop culture children’s characters (sorry princess) and welcome sophisticated themes like beach chic, safari adventure, Moroccan-inspired, a carnival or circus spin, or a nod to nautical. Not only will the space evolve with the child as he or she gets older, the stylish room will keep mom happy when she spends time there nursing and changing diapers (and more diapers).

Walls that wow

Parents are looking to make bold statement walls with impressive graphics. Last year chevrons and horizontal stripes were all the rage and this year is about wall stencils. No, we’re not talking about the floral wall stencils from the 90s. Wall stencils have gotten a modern makeover in recent years and range from modern graphics to a subtle wallpaper look.

Eclectic bedding

Today’s modern moms are forgoing traditional matchy-matchy nursery sets and are choosing bedding that looks like it was effortlessly thrown together. We’re seeing one primary print with 1-2 coordinating prints varying among the comforter, crib skirt and sheets for a mix-and-match effect.

Shades of Gray

Move over beige – gray is the new neutral to have. It works wonderfully in gender-neutral nurseries or to balance out hot hues. The color pairs nicely with most accents, but we’re especially crushing on gray when paired with yellow — a hot color combo right now.

Getting crafty

With nursery inspiration boards on Pinterest growing in popularity, people are getting pin-spired to get crafty and try their hand at some DIY.  Custom flag pendants, felt garland, and tissue pom poms have been popular nursery craft projects for the last few years. Handmade mobiles and 3d artwork are gaining in popularity. Not in touch with your inner Martha Stewart? Some Etsy shops will create a custom look for you.

Personal touch

Monograms aren’t just for Southern Belles anymore. We’re seeing them on bedding and blankets for babies (and pillow cases for adult bedrooms). Artwork that’s personalized with baby’s name and date of birth helps create a custom look. Wall art created by initials is currently popular on Pinterest.

Try: Lowercase letters; Pink owl canvas art; Harper quilt
